History of Land Rover

Land Rover was founded in 1947 after a Rover designer had been inspired by American Jeeps that he had seen in World War Two.

The Land Rover Series 1, as the original model was called, achieved much attention for its looks and reliability. The Land Rover Series 2 followed in 1958 and continued Land Rover's success as a producer of 4x4 vehicles.

But the popularity of Land Rover was not just in the UK – the marque being a popular choice of 4x4 vehicle across the world.

After Land Rover became part of British Leyland in the 1960s the Range Rover brand was created. The Range Rover Classic, as it was called, met a demand for a luxury SUV vehicle and was a performance 4x4, like the Land Rover Series 2, but had more comfortable design features. The Range Rover was billed as being ‘as comfortable on road as it was off-road’ and was very popular when it was released.

Range Rovers are still in production today – luxury SUVs that are both on and off-road compatible. The recently introduced Range Rover Evoque is a more compact model which meets the demand for an affordable Range Rover. Both models continue Range Rover's history of being a quality 4x4 that are also suitable for family use.

Land Rover itself still continued to produce vehicles under its own brand and has run as a separate company from Rover since the mid-1970s. The old-style Land Rover continued to be popular with the Series 3 in production until the late 1980s.

This was updated in the early 1980s with the Land Rover 90, which later became the Defender range of vehicles. The Defender saw an increase in performance and popularity for this type of Land Rover 4X4 and was more comfortable at higher speeds than other Land Rover models. The latest versions of the Land Rover Defender also comply with greater emission and safety tests.

The 1980s also saw the production of the Land Rover Discovery range of vehicles which were first introduced in 1989. The Discovery, which is also known as the ‘Disco’ is seminal in Land Rover production as it is based upon the Range Rover but at a lesser cost. There have been many updates to the Disco / Discovery range to modernise the look and performance of the cars. The Discovery 2 came out in 1998 and was followed by the Discovery 3 in 2005. The latest version is the Discover 4 which has been in production since 2010.

Land Rover also produces a Freelander model which first came into production in 1997 and fits into the compact SUV range of cars. It has proved popular in its range and the Freelander 2 is still in production today.

Land Rover has continued to be an internationally acclaimed producer of off-road vehicles for over 50 years and shows no signs of slowing down in today's market.
