Business Insurance - 62 per cent total tax on UK fuel, says IAM

The UK's largest independent road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), claims that 62 pence from every pound spent at the pumps is tax with only 38 pence representing fuel.

The Motoring Taxation and Public Spending report claims government spending on road infrastructure and public transport is only one-third of its total tax revenue (£12.752 million out of a total £43.885 million).

However, the amount paid in tax per individual car owner has actually fallen as the greater number of road vehicles has spread the tax burden.

Nevertheless, the current situation has been labelled "plainly unfair" by the IAM's director of policy and research Neil Greig.

He urged the government to reverse the downward trend in road investment, claiming "spending on [road] infrastructure now will save money in the long-term".

The IAM is the charity behind the advanced driving tests, with a network of 200 local volunteer groups and over 100,000 members across UK and Ireland.
