Business Insurance - Biofuels policies 'have created a number of problems'

The widespread use of biofuels could be having a detrimental affect on the environment, a study has suggested.

Although the European Union wants ten per cent of the continent's transport to be powered by such means by 2020, research conducted by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has discovered this may be an unwise policy.

It indicated the fuel is not having the desired impact on the amount of emissions produced and the production of crops is proving problematic on a number of fronts.

Indeed, in many cases, biofuel plants are being prioritised over food growth, which has seen the price of the latter increase.

Authors of the report have also questioned the ethical implications of using biofuels, as it has been said to encourage slave labour in some developing nations.

Despite the problems, Biofuel.co.uk has reiterated the importance of the process, as too many countries are over-reliant on fossil fuels such as coal and oil.
