Business Insurance - Green cars could save money on fleet costs, says expert

Companies who regularly have to take out business car insurance could save through investing in low-carbon vehicles, according to an expert from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The comments come in response to reports of wildly fluctuating fuel prices and to recent information from the RAC Foundation which highlighted the low uptake of the coalition's Plug-In Car Grant proposal.

However, the UK automotive industry is "firmly on course" to meeting its 2015 EU carbon emissions target of 130 grams per kilometre with the SMMT's latest CO2 report showing that in June, average new car emissions fell to 138.9 grams, according to the society's head of communications Nikki Rooke.

She added: "As well as the savings from greater fuel efficiency that can be delivered, an electric car or hybrid fleet can deliver savings on parking [and] congestion charge[s]."

The report from the RAC Foundation found that there are currently less than 2,500 green vehicles out of a fleet of 28 million cars in the UK, with only 215 autos purchased using the government scheme between April and June this year compared to 465 in the first three months of 2011.
