Business Insurance - How to maintain diesel particulate filters

Drivers who only take their cars out on short runs and who are concerned that their diesel particulate filters (DPFs) will become clogged up with soot have been offered some advice for managing the problem.

Writing for the Sunday Mirror, Quentin Willson noted that these machinery parts do not cope well with cheap oil, fuel or limited journeys, but explained that there is a way to help tackle the issue.

"To keep your diesel particulate filter clear, it's best to run at 60-70mph for 15-20 minutes every week," he observed.

Motorists might find that investing in the right type of Castrol Magnatec synthetic oil and Shell V-Power Diesel is of assistance as well - Mr Willson stated that, although they cost more, "you're guarding yourself against a potential [£2,000] bill".

Further tips came from the AA, which recommended emptying the DPF frequently to maintain vehicle performance and clearing any warning lights by driving for ten minutes above 40mph.
