Business Insurance - Businesses 'are realising low carbon means low running costs'

Sales of more fuel-efficient cars are increasing, one industry expert has pointed out.

Dr Ben Lane, director of nextgreencar.com - which provides information to consumers researching environmentally-friendly cars - stated one of the reasons for this rise in purchases of green motors is that businesses have realised low carbon means low running costs.

He added: "Since 2008 as fuel costs have increased and disposable income has reduced, people have been turning to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars."

What's more, Dr Lane pointed towards the recession as another motive for people buying such energy-efficient vehicles.

He noted the prospects for electric cars are looking good, which comes at a time when the government has made its plug-in grant available, enabling someone who wishes to buy a specific eco-friendly motors to receive funding of up to £5,000.

This comes after the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed the market share for motors with CO2-emitting levels of 100 g/km or less has increased.
