Business Insurance - FTA raises funds for Transaid

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has presented a cheque for £150,000 to Transaid as part of its ongoing support for the charity.

It represents the total funds raised by the logistics organisation as part of its recent Cycle Challenge event that was held over the summer, while the figure was also boosted by the body's fundraising efforts from previous years.

The cash is now to be used to bolster Transaid's efforts to raise funds and awareness of its Professional Driver Training Project in Zambia and Tanzania, which aims to save the lives of thousands of people through improved training for motoring professionals in the two countries.

Stewart Oades of the FTA said: "We are delighted that FTA members, staff and colleagues have shown such amazing generosity in raising this fantastic sum over the past two-and-a-half years or so, in order to support the important work that Transaid carries out."

Transaid is an international charity which aims to reduce poverty throughout Africa and the developing world through the provision of better transport infrastructure.

It was founded by and continues to be supported by a number of high-profile organisations, including Save the Children, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and HRH the Princess Royal.

Gary Forster, chief executive of Transaid, added: "Our London to Paris Ride this October aims to reduce the economic and social impact of road crashes across Africa and the developing world; the FTA's help to organise this ride is yet another vital contribution to our work and to the international road safety agenda in this UN decade of road safety."

A number of organisations are helping to support the upcoming event, with the FTA, CILT, the Road Haulage Association and Transport for London all involved in some capacity. Transaid has set a target of raising £100,000 through this year's race.
