About the Peugeot 205 GTI

The Peugeot 205 was produced from 1983 to 1998 and was named ‘Car of the Decade’ by CAR magazine and it was What Car’s ‘Car of the Year’ 1984.

According to Wikipedia, before the launch of the 205, Peugeot was thought of as the most conservative of France's major motor manufacturers. 

The 205 was one of five iconic small cars to be launched in Europe within a year of each other: the other four being the Fiat Uno, the ‘new’ Ford Fiesta, the Vauxhall Nova and the Nissan Micra, followed soon after by the Austin Metro and the VW Polo.

The Peugeot 205 GTI was first launched in 1984 (the same year that the three-door body style was introduced) and was powered by a fuel injected 1.6 petrol engine. The 1.9 GTI was launched in 1986.

To this day, opinion is still divided as to which variant provides the best Peugeot 205 GTI experience. As Autocar Magazine highlights, ‘some preferring the peaky power delivery of the 1.6-litre derivative and others favouring the increased torque of the 1.9.

However, the Peugeot 205 GTi in either form is still comfortably regarded as one of the greatest hot hatchbacks of all time.”
