The Citroen 2CV Story

The Citroen 2CV (meaning two ‘taxable horsepower’) is an air-cooled, front engine, front wheel drive, family, introduced in 1948 and manufactured form 1948 all the way until 1990. 

Between these years, 1948 - 1990, more than 3.8 million 2CVs were produced, making it the world's first million seller front-wheel drive car. As Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citro%C3%ABn_2CV underlines;

“The 2CV platform spawned many variants. The 2CV and its variants are collectively known as the A-Series, these included 2CV-based delivery vans known as ‘fourgonnettes’, the Ami, the Dyane, the Acadiane and the Mehari. In total, Citroën manufactured over nine million 2CVs and its derivative models.” 

Originally conceived after World War 2 by Citroën Vice-President Pierre Boulanger, to help put the large number of French farmers still using horses and carts in France, on the road, the 2CV boasted a combination of innovative engineering and straightforward, utilitarian bodywork. The 2CV was cheap to run and simple to maintain. 

Often called "the umbrella on wheels", it featured a full-width, canvas, roll-back sunroof which could take big loads – up until 1955 thsi stretched to cover the car's boot, 

Both the design and the history of the 2CV mirror the other iconic post war car design, the VW Beetle. Just like it’s German counterpart, the 2CV not only sold well over 1 million units, it’s also one of the few cars in history to be produced in one run over four decades.

The 2 CV was also produced in Britain, Citroën's plant in Slough producing the cars from 1953 to 1960. Making the car in Britain allowed Citroën to work around trade barriers and to sell cars in the British Empire where it achieved great success. 

Following the oil crisis, 1975, the 2CV was re-introduced to the British market. This second coming of 2CVs in the UK were made in France but avoided the crippling import duties of the 1950s, because the UK was now a member of the EEC. In the 1980s, the best markets for the 2CV outside France were the UK and West Germany.

Once a common sight on British roads, 2CVs are now collectors’ cars and a part of many classic car collections – with prices varying from £5,000 to as much as £20,000+.
