Road deaths increase is 'a worry'

The latest figures reported by the Department for Transport (DfT) concerning an increase in the number of fatal road traffic accidents during 2011 have been released.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the government needs to therefore collaborate more closely with bodies such as itself to deliver a safer transport network.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, commented: "While we appreciate that the government has tough funding decisions to make, we must now do more to arrest and reverse the number of people being killed or hurt on our roads."

He added that the data should be seen as an opportunity to rethink the way in which road safety is being delivered.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) also responded to the publication of the figures, claiming greater efforts now need to be made to curb the rise in the number of drink-related accidents that are being seen on the country's roads.

The DfT data revealed a three per cent increase in the number of individuals killed on the UK's roads last year to 1,901 people , while the number of cases of serious injury increased by two per cent to 23,122 people.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig therefore urged new road safety minister Stephen Hammond to place improving the standard of care for all road users across the UK as his top priority.

Finally, the results also garnered a response from vehicle safety charity TyreSafe, with the organisation focusing on the number of cases where faulty tyres played a role in incidents in the last year.

According to the DfT's findings, 205 people were killed or seriously injured in an accident where illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, stated: "October's tyre safety month is the perfect opportunity to carry out some basic tyre checks and help put a stop to this needless loss of life."
