'Check laws and regulations before making modifications to your car'

People should research thoroughly before making changes to their vehicle, according to Direct Line.

Jennifer Culley from the company said that modifications which increase a car's "performance, value or desirability to a thief, will also attract increased premiums".

She explained this is because such changes raise the "risk, value or likelihood of a claim".

Ms Culley advised those planning on making modifications to their vehicles to make sure they get the work done by a professional as "there can be implications that an amateur may not consider".

In March 2008, the Insurance Daily reported results from confused.com research that found modifying a vehicle could increase insurance costs by up to 139 per cent.

Last year, bull bars were banned by EU law in a bid to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries caused.

During June, a law was passed in Peoria, Illinois, that allowed police to fine drivers of vehicles with tinted windows and window tinting companies.
