Modified car insurance holders 'should notify provider of any changes'

Modified car insurance policy holders  who make further changes to their vehicle should inform the company which provides their cover, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), if work is carried out on a motor it can affect the cost of premiums.

The group explained this was because certain modifications can make cars more attractive to thieves, a higher accident risk or more expensive to repair.

It added people who fail to notify insurance providers of any changes made risk invalidating their policy.

Before deciding to carry out modification work, ABI also urged vehicle owners to think carefully about whether they are qualified to do the job.

Spokesman Malcolm Tarling said: "While I am not an expert on car mechanics, people should not attempt any modifications unless they know what they are doing."

Although some additions to a vehicle may prove costly, changes which improve security could allow motorists to reduce the amount they spend on insurance.
