UK motorists throwing away money by failing to check tyres

British motorists, including those with modified car insurance policies, are collectively wasting more than £1 billion a year, according to Cooper Tire.

Research by the company found that at any one time 95 per cent of vehicles on the road have at least one tyre under-inflated by ten per cent.

Cooper Tire state that this increases fuel consumption, reduces the life of the tyre and makes the prospect of an accident more likely.

It points out that under-inflated tyres are harder to get moving and can result in a 2.5 per cent increase in fuel consumption.

Product Manager Malcolm Jones said checking tyre pressure is a very simple task.

He added: "As the credit crunch grips the country, it's amazing that drivers aren't bothering to do it, as it could save them money and, more importantly, keep them safe on the road."

Haynes has also claimed that motorists are wasting money by failing to check their cars before an MOT test.
