Young driver campaign 'will probably fail'

A recently launched campaign to make young motorists safer drivers is well-meaning but is likely to fail, it has been claimed.

Road safety organisation Safe Speed has said that the Deadly Mates campaign and website, launched in Wales, do not provide young drivers with the advice they need to become safer - potentially avoiding modified car insurance claims.

The website asks teenagers to figure out whether their friends speed and if so, avoid travelling in the car with them.

Paul Smith, founder of SafeSpeed.org.uk, said: "The advice on the Deadly Mates website is well intentioned but falls a million miles short of the mark."

In response, Safe Speed has outlined some points to help young motorists become safer drivers - and potentially help them keep their modified car insurance premiums intact.

The group urges these drivers to remember that having a licence is only the first rung of the ladder and it is important to always drive for the conditions.
