Antique auto owners 'should check their oil'

Owners of vintage vehicles who do not want to risk losing access to cheap classic car insurance may be well advised to make sure they check their oil regularly.

According to auto care company Comma, too many people are neglecting this simple task and putting their motors at risk as a result.

The firm issued this warning after conducting research that found some five million drivers never get under the bonnet to conduct a dipstick test.

Seat owners were found to be the worst culprits when it came to neglecting maintenance, with 71.4 per cent admitting they do not check their oil as often as they should.

Comma claimed failing to carry out this basic test could be a costly mistake.

It explained an engine without sufficient lubrication can develop serious mechanical failures that are expensive to put right, adding the average repair bill for such problems is £1,413.

Meanwhile, motorists who have an accident because they did not look after their antique auto properly may find the cost of their classic car insurance goes up as well.
