Classic Mini named number one British car

Research from Manheim Auctions has revealed the pre-1980 vintage Mini Minor is the most 'British' car according to motorists.

The study attempted to gauge drivers' perceptions on what makes a classic British car and found that production locality, brand history and owners of the manufacturer all play a part when buying a new car.

Policyholders of classic car insurancemay be unsurprised to hear of the Jaguar E-type coming fourth in the top ten, ahead of the American-owned and overseas-manufactured Ford Focus, which respondents adopted as a quintessentially British motor.

"There are many cars associated with Britain when in fact they're not strictly British," commented Manheim Auctions marketing director Craig Mailey.

However, he added what was really interesting was that the "tide has turned and motorists would, if they could, buy a British car".

Research from the organisers of the Silverstone Classic recently found that its 3,000 respondents favoured the Jaguar E-type as their classic car of choice.
