Garages urged to show support for code

Motorists reluctant to take their vintage vehicles to a garage for servicing because of a bad experience in the past may back calls for more businesses to sign up to a code of practice.

A government representative has stated more independent firms in particular should think about demonstrating their commitment to providing excellent customer service.

Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas said with times being tight for many people at the moment the issue was more relevant than ever.

He claimed: "It's particularly important during the economic downturn that consumers are reassured they're getting a good deal."

The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair was introduced in the UK in 2008 in a bid to improve the image of garages.

According to the people behind the scheme, it should make it easier for drivers to identify reliable businesses.

Taking an antique auto for regular servicing could help prevent the vehicle from developing faults that could cause an accident.

In turn, this could allow motorists to protect their cheap classic car insurance premiums.
