Government bike safety campaign 'will save lives'

The government's new campaign to improve awareness of the risks motorcyclists face on the roads will help to increase their safety, according to a Derby road safety body.

Derby & Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership has welcomed the recent launch of the Think Bike, Think Biker initiative, which is utilising national advertisements to encourage drivers to be more mindful of motorbikes on the roads.

The campaign is also calling on bikers to wear appropriate safety gear and consider undertaking development training to improve their riding ability.

Mike Ashworth, chairman of the partnership in Derby, welcomed all of these initiatives, noting that bikes are easy to miss on the roads due to the fact they are narrower than cars.

"This campaign encourages drivers to be vigilant by getting them to think about the lives of riders and the people who would miss them if they were killed," he said.

Last week, a new safety campaign was launched by Central Bedfordshire Council, which has seen special signs being erected across the area to remind motorcyclists to pay special attention on dangerous stretches.
