Aston Martin Insurance from PD

There is, perhaps, no British sports car brand as iconic as Aston Martin. Forever associated with James Bond, the brand has come to epitomize British style and performance.

Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. The first car to be called an Aston Martin was actually created by Martin by fitting a four-cylinder engine to the chassis of a 1908 car.

Throughout the war years the company’s fortunes ebbed and flowed but it was only in 1947, when tractor manufacturer David Brown Ltd. bought the company, under the leadership of managing director Sir. David Brown, that Aston Martin’s story really begins.

During 1947 David Brown also bought Lagonda and with that purchase, rights for its remarkable 2.6-litre Bentley-designed engine.

Together, the companies shared staff, expertise and working space, creating the classic ‘DB’ – David Brown – cars. In 1950, the company announced the DB2 followed by the DB3 and the DB4 in 1958.

Of all these models the DB4 stood out and led to the famous DB5 created in 1963, the company staying true to its ‘grand tourer’ style with the DB6, and then the DBS.

The 1970s and 1980s proved difficult years for Aston Martin, the company finally being bought by Ford in 1994 and then, most recently by a Dave Richards (Prodrive) led consortium in 2007.

Aston Martin and James Bond.

It was in the book of Goldfinger, Ian Fleming’s 7th James Bond novel where the enduring love affair between Aston Martin and James... James Bond was born.

In the book, Fleming stipulated that 007 drove an Aston Martin DB3 while on the hunt for Goldfinger.

Fleming explained that the car had a few modifications to assist his work as a spy: reinforced bumpers and other mundane and highly practical alterations (replaced by machine guns and bullet proof panels in the film). And so, it was only natural that in the 1964 film version of Goldfinger that Sean Connery drove Aston Martin’s latest, iconic design, the DB5.

It proved an irresistible combination and one that has survived (with very few wrong tunings) until the present day combination of Daniel Craig and the original DB5 featured in the latest Bond film, Skyfall.
