History of TVR

TVR is an iconic manufacturer of sports and performance vehicles that has gained a cult status amongst motoring enthusiasts. TVR has always produced cars in short production runs to high mechanical and performance specifications.

TVR began as an independent company producing models made to order in the late 1940s and early 1950s but soon began to develop commercial models of their own, the first of which being the Grantura sports coupe which was released in 1958. The Grantura Mark 1 marked the beginning of TVR's popularity as an independent car manufacturer with many of the early TVR models being exported to the USA for racing.

However the company ran into financial difficulties and underwent a number of changes at boardroom level. There were, however, some successes on the racing circuit such as the TVR Griffith model. However the success was short-lived and the company closed its doors in 1964.

TVR's liquidation did not last long though as the assets were purchased by Arthur and Martin Lilley in late 1965. Better management saw the company introduce a new car, the Tuscan in 1967. Although the Tuscan V8 was not a commercial success for TVR it plowed the way for greater successes in the future.

This came soon with the creation of the Vixen in 1968. Production increased and a new M series was released to replace the Vixen. The increased production levels saw a greater stabilisation of the brand and TVR began to grow throughout Europe.

In the late 1970s the brand began to modernise and the TVR Tamsin was designed as a coupe for the brand. The Tamsin was released in 1980 to positive feedback from journalists but sales did not reflect this and TVR was sold once again.

Under the new management and new design features TVR's success increased during the 1980s. The TVR Chimera, Cerbera, Sagaris, T350 and the Tamora were all successful designs which came out under the ownership of Peter Wheeler. This era is what cemented TVR in people's minds as a high quality performance car from an independent manufacturer.

TVR was sold again in 2006, however, its production fell and, once again, the company got into financial difficulty. However, in 2013 the TVR brand was purchased by a British consortium with the aim of reinvigorating it. Nothing has been announced but there has been a great deal of excitement that the brand is to move forward once again.
